HISTORY

The history of the Global South Network is rooted in the history of activities carried out by its founder: Dr Nauman Reayat. During his PhD study Dr Nauman conducted numerous field interviews with judges, representatives of civil society organisations, ex-service men, journalists, and senior lawyers. He organised numerous panel discussions and conferences nationally and internationally. The GSN emerged out of all these activities that are chronologically given as follows:

Judicial Politics in South Asia (August 2021)

In August 2021, Convener/Founder Global South Network, Dr Nauman organised a panel discussion on judicial politics in South Asia. The panel included Prof. Tarunabh Khaitan of Oxford School of Law, Dinesha Smararatne of the University of Colombo, and Prof. Ridwan ul Hoque of Charles Darwin University, Australia, and Mohammad Qaseem Danishyar, Justice and Judicial Affairs Expert, Administrative Office of the President of Afghanistan. He discussed how judicial populism works in the context of authoritarian and hybrid regimes.

Judicial independence in established and developing democracies. (September 2021)

In September 2021, Dr Nauman Reayat, Convener/Founder, Global South Network organised a panel discussion on the comparison of judicial independence in autocracies and democracies (e.g. UK). The panel consisted of Prof. Roger Masterman, Durham Law School, Assistant Prof. Moohyung Cho of the Department of Politics and International Studies, Ewha Women’s University, South Korea and Patrick O’Brien of the Faculty of Law, Oxford Brookes University. The Former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, Ajit Prakash Shah, chaired the panel. Dr Nauman compared the nature and scope of judicial independence in established democracies and developing democracies.

Judicial independence in developing countries (April 2022)

I have organised and chaired a panel discussion on judicial independence in developing countries for the annual conference of the Political Studies Association (April 2022). The panel consists of Dr Tarik Olcay, Lecturer, Dundee Law School; Laura-Stella Enonchong, Senior Lecturer, School of Law, De Montfort University, Leicester; Dr Sara Razai, Research Fellow, BIICL; Dr Moohyung Cho, Assistant Prof., Department of Politics and International Studies, Ewha Women’s University, Korea.

Constitutionalism in Developing Democracies (YORK)

Dr Nauman regularly ran a stream titled “Constitutionalism in Developing Democracies” for Socio-Legal Studies Association (SLSA) during its annual conference at the University of York April 2022.

The Rule of Law in Developing Democracies (July 2022)

 Dr Nauman organised and chaired the panel on judicial independence in the Developing Democracies for the annual conference of the International Society of Public Law (July 2022). The panel includes Prof Hakeem Yusuf, Ulster Law School, Kesang Wangmo, Lecturer, Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law, Bhutan; Prof. Wahab Egbewole, Department of Jurisprudence and International Law, Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin, Nigeria, and Prof. Assefa Fiseha, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia.

Law and Society Association (July 2022)

 Dr Nauman organised and chaired a full panel on the rule of law in developing democracies for the annual conference of the Law and Society Association (July 2022). The panellists are Sahar Maranlou, Lecturer, Essex Law School; Venkat Iyer, Senior Lecturer, Ulster Law School; Olivia Lwabukuna, Lecturer, SOAS Law School; Carol Gray, PhD candidate, Department of Political Science, University of Connecticut. I will chair this panel.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON JUDICIAL INDEPENDENCE IN DEVELOPING DEMOCRACIES, AUGUST 2022

LAUNCH EVENT OF THE GLOBAL SOUTH NETWORK

The founder/convener Global South Network Dr Nauman Reayat organised the launch event of the Global South Network on Friday 17 March 2023. Justice Ayesha Malik, Supreme Court of Pakistan virtually gave the keynote speech via teams/zoom. Legal scholars, political scientists, civil society organisations, and practitioners from Poland, Mexico, Pakistan, India, Israel, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Chile, South Korea, and Bangladesh presented their introductions via teams. Details are provided here.

             

 Constitutionalism in Developing Democracies 2023 (Derry)

Dr Nauman organised and ran the stream titled “Constitutionalism in Developing Democracies” for Socio-Legal Studies Association (SLSA) during its annual conferences in April 2022 and April 2023. The stream received around 50 papers. Dr Nauman organised and chaired seven panels comprising 24 presentations by scholars of different career levels, age, gender, nationalities, and ethnicities over three days of the conference.
