THE FIRST ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE GLOBAL SOUTH NETWORK (GSN) 2024

23 JULY 2024, TUESDAY, 9:30 TO 14:00 AT SIR BOB BURGESS BUILDING, UNIVERSITY OF LEICESTER, LEICESTER, UK.

The First Annual General Meeting of the Global South Network (GSN) was held on 23 July 2024.  It was aimed at celebrating the network’s achievements since its launch on 17 March 2023 and making the network more inclusive and diverse by providing all with equal opportunity to shape decision making through their advice and feedback.

The Vice Chancellor University of Leicester Prof Nishan Canagarajah delivered the keynote speech. The speech was part of the network’s new initiative to inspire people to continue bridging gaps between the Global North and South. The speech was followed by networking and the session titled “Postgraduate Researchers (PGRs) from, or focusing on, the Global South: Challenges and Solutions”.

GSN started its journey on 17 March 2023. As of today, it is the only network led by an early career academic (Dr Nauman Reayat) that organised around 63 knowledge exchange activities (including  4 international hybrid conferences, around 50 high quality online PhD in Progress weekly panel-discussion seminars, 9 guest lectures of supreme court judges from different countries), created a team of conveners,  established an interdisciplinary advisory committee, activated the website and YouTube channel, created editorial board of GSN blogs, organised thematic and geographic groups within GSN, launched GSN mentoring, completed two edited collections on judicial independence,  and created opportunities of public engagement for academics from all backgrounds just over a year of the network’s launch.

The legal issues of the Global South received due attention and equal space was given to the issues of Afghanistan, Ukraine, and Palestine during the above activities.

GSN is the only network run by an early career academic that went beyond criticising the Middle East Crisis to contributing to bridging gaps between conflicting states by strengthening equality, diversity, and inclusion during its judges guest lecture series.
